Small Habits That Make a Big Difference in Mental Wellness

By: Haleigh Tumminello

Greetings! May is Mental Health Awareness Month, a time to shed light on the importance of mental well-being, and to remind ourselves that nourishing our minds is just as vital as nourishing our bodies! While therapy, medication, and support systems are key parts of many people's mental health journeys, it is also true that small and consistent habits can have a powerful impact on how we feel and function every day.

If the idea of making major lifestyles changes feels daunting, don't worry. You don't need a complete overhaul to begin caring for your mental health. Sometimes, it's the simplest daily choices can help us feel more grounded, hopeful, and more in control. Here are a few small but mighty habits that can really make a difference:

  1. Start Your Day with Stillness

Before waking up and reaching for your phone, or jumping straight to your to-do list, try taking a few quiet moments in the morning. These quiet moments may look differently for everyone; whether it is deep breathing, prayer, journaling or simply sitting in silence, your chosen moments of stillness can set a more intentional tone for the day ahead.

  1. Practice Gratitude Daily

Taking time to acknowledge what is going well, even in hard seasons, can really shift your perspective! Try writing down three things you are thankful for each day, they don't have to be big. A warm cup of coffee, your favorite book, sunshine, or even your cat napping in your lap all count as things to be grateful for! Focusing on the good can help manage the bad.

  1. Move Your Body (I know, I know, just a little though!)

You don't have to run a marathon to feel better mentally. A short walk, a gentle stretch, or a dance break in your kitchen can release endorphins, improve your mood, and reduce stress!

  1. Limit Screen Time and Information Overload

Listen, I know better than anyone how easy it is to fall victim to doom scrolling, but our minds need time to rest from constant stimulation. Consider setting screen time limits, turning off notifications, or choosing specific times of day to check news and social media. Your peace of mind is worth protecting.

  1. Stay Connected with People who Lift You Up

You don't have to navigate life alone. A quick check in with friend/friends, a shared laugh, or a heartfelt conversation can remind you that you are loved and supported. Nurture the relationships that nurture you.

  1. Talk Kindly to yourself (and about yourself!)

The way that we speak to ourselves, and about ourselves to others, matters more than you may think. Take a moment and notice your inner dialogue... is it critical or compassionate? Try replacing harsh thoughts about yourself/your situation with the kind words you'd offer to a friend. This takes practice, but it can truly be transformative.

  1. Get Enough Rest!

I personally cannot stress this one enough! A personal tidbit; this previous month was all things Finals related, as it was for most college students, and I found myself staying up into the wee hours of the morning, only to turn around and be up at 6:45 for work. I noticed such a negative shift in my behavior, mood and energy purely because I wasn't getting enough rest. Rest is not laziness, it is a vital part of mental health. Establishing a bedtime routine helps you wind down, and gives your body and mind the gift of real rest!

You Don't Have to Do It All

If you're reading this and feeling the pressure to check every box, take a deep breath. Start with one small habit that resonates with you. Build from there. Healing and growth don't come from perfection, they come from showing up for yourself, one day at a time.

This month let's commit to the little things that help us feel a little more like ourselves. You're worth it!
